The Advocacy & Protection for People With Mental Illness is a Mental Health Organization. APPMI was founded in 1985 by individuals who are, or have been, consumers of the public and / or private mental health system. We are  an advocacy group as well as a mutual self-help organization that offers a network of support to thousands of individuals living in the community.  APPMI, along with its many affiliated agencies has become one of the most effective consumer-run alternatives in the country. APPMI advocates for the  rights and dignity that all  people suffering from mental or emotional illness deserve. Justice in Mental Health means justice within our lives. Justice in family, housing, employment and our social lives, with civil and legal rights as well. Our motto,"Gentle Justice," has taken  APPMI far as an organization in helping to secure dignity and respect for mental health consumers. Over the last 17 years, APPMI has assisted thousands in solving living, emotional and / or health problems by having consumers utilize their own experiences to assist one another in locating and accessing resources. APPMI also works as a consultant with state agencies, researchers, mental health professionals  and consumer organizations in helping to develop, empower and promote consumer-run alternatives. APPMI is composed of five separate projects: a Drop-In Center, Project Stay, Project DOORS, Fair-weather Project and a Transitional Housing Program. Each of these projects works to better the lives of individuals in the community No one deserves to be treated as inhumanely as we have been. No one should be neglected as we have been. Trying to live with our mental and emotional problems kept in the closet gets us nowhere. We  need not be ashamed of where we have been. We are proud that we have endured and that we have survived. APPMI believes that everyone deserves the right to live their lives to the fullest, in their own individual way.
